Last February, the intersection at the base of Las Flores Canyon Road was under a layer of mud. A month after the Palisades Fire spared the building, a storm sent about four feet of debris into the dining room at 21150 Pacific Coast Highway, and the parking lot that had staged fire crews became a cleanup site. For fourteen months, the eastern anchor of this stretch of coast was a hollow shell behind a construction fence.
On March 13, 2026, that changed. If you live between Las Flores Creek and Big Rock, the practical shape of your summer changed with it, though not in the way a visitor might assume.
The reopening, in the terms that matter to a neighbor
Duke's Malibu reopened on Friday, March 13, after nearly 14 months closed following the Palisades Fire and the mudslide that followed. The fire itself did not take the building. Heavy rains triggered a mudslide that sent four feet of debris into the structure, forcing a full interior renovation and the layoff of 126 employees.
The reopening is partial by design. The restaurant is running four days a week, typically noon to 7 or 8 p.m. ABC7 reported the initial schedule as Thursday through Sunday, noon to 8. If you have been counting on Duke's for a Tuesday sunset the way you did in 2023, that habit does not yet come back this summer.
Two other details from the reopening are worth holding onto:
- The Barefoot Bar reopened in late 2025, several months ahead of the dining room, which is why the deck was already reachable to some regulars before the wider reopening.
- The deck itself was rebuilt during the renovation, so the ocean-side view you are looking at this summer is a replacement, not the pre-fire surface.
- A 30th-anniversary celebration is planned for later this summer.
The PCH clock you now plan around
Reopening the restaurant does not reopen the road. The stretch of Pacific Coast Highway that Las Flores Beach residents use every day is still an active Caltrans work zone, and the schedule is the single most important thing to internalize before mid-July.
As of the City of Malibu's April 2026 update, the practical constraints between Temescal Canyon and Carbon Beach Terrace look like this:

Two things follow from that table. First, the SCE work between Carbon Canyon and Las Flores runs on weekends as well as weekdays, which is the reverse of the pattern most residents assume. That segment closes a northbound lane from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. weekdays and 5 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekends, with southbound closures 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays. A Saturday morning run to Pavilions is not the free lane it used to be.
Second, the 9 a.m.–3 p.m. weekday window in front of your driveway is not a suggestion. Fines are doubled in work zones. Plan hardware store runs and school pickups outside those hours if you can.
When Duke's is dark, the neighborhood eats west
Monday through Wednesday, the closest reliable ocean-view lunch is 2.8 miles west at Malibu Seafood. The market and cafe at 25653 Pacific Coast Highway has been on this stretch since the 1970s, evolved from a fish counter into a patio restaurant, and runs daily from 11 to 7:30. It is still owned and operated by commercial fishermen, which is why the day's fillets in the case tend to be shorter on farmed salmon and longer on local rockfish than the average PCH lunch spot.
Two things to know if you have not been in a while. The lot is small and the overflow spills onto the shoulder of PCH, which in a 25 mph work zone means you should give yourself an extra ten minutes on either end. And the ordering system is order-and-buzzer, patio seating, no table service, which is worth telegraphing to any houseguest who arrives expecting Nobu.
The beach access problem the fire did not cause
One piece of Las Flores Beach geography did not change with the reopening, and it is worth stating plainly because visitors will keep asking.
Las Flores Beach sits east of Las Flores Creek where it crosses under PCH near Las Flores Canyon Road and the Duke's Malibu restaurant. There is no longer an access at the Duke's parking lot, and neither the state nor Los Angeles County has provided an official accessway to the beach. A small unlocked gate near a wood power pole at 20466 PCH offers a scramble down the bluff through Caltrans property. The closest official public gate is at Big Rock Beach, 20000 PCH, from which it is possible to walk at low tide east to Las Flores and, in the other direction, all the way to Carbon Beach.
Access enforcement on this stretch has teeth. In 2021, an appeals court upheld a $4 million California Coastal Commission fine against the owners of 20802 PCH for blocking public access to Las Flores Beach. If you live here, the low-tide walk from Big Rock is still the cleanest way to introduce a guest to the sand without a scramble.
Las Flores Creek Park, the small pocket park at 3805 Las Flores Canyon Road, remains closed. The City of Malibu's facility page still lists it as closed until further notice, so the pollinator garden and playground are not on the summer roster this year.
What is coming after this summer
The intersection at the bottom of your canyon is on a design calendar you should have in your head.
The City of Malibu is in preliminary design of a safety project at the PCH intersections of Las Flores Canyon Road and Rambla Pacifico, with design anticipated to complete in 2026 and construction to begin in 2027. The scope reconfigures traffic signals and lanes at both intersections in each direction, adds new striping and signage, and includes pedestrian and bicycle improvements.
Read against the current Caltrans work, this means the intersection you use to get home is scheduled to be an active construction site again in 2027, on top of whatever slope and drainage repair extends past this summer. If you have been assuming that PCH goes back to a 45 mph highway once the fire work ends, adjust the mental model. The signal timing itself is being rebuilt.
A workable Saturday from a Las Flores Beach front door
Here is how the constraints add up in one day, using only the facts on the ground:
- Leave the house before 7 a.m. to get north of Sunset Boulevard while the 25 mph zone is empty and the SCE weekend closure has not yet ramped up.
- Coffee and the paper somewhere off-PCH if you are heading inland; if you are staying, come back before 9.
- Low-tide window on the sand: check the tide chart, drop in at Big Rock at 20000 PCH, walk east toward the creek mouth.
- Lunch at Malibu Seafood, patio, before the 12:30 line stretches to the road.
- Sunset at Duke's Thursday, Friday, Saturday, or Sunday. Barefoot Bar if the dining room is booked. Reservation calls fill the four operating days quickly right now, so treat it more like a Friday-night table in Santa Monica than the walk-in it used to be.
- Home before the northbound weekend closure between Carbon Canyon and Las Flores locks in for the afternoon.
That is the honest shape of the summer. Duke's coming back is real, and it matters more than any single reopening on this coast in the last two years. The rest of the neighborhood's rhythm still runs on Caltrans's calendar, and it will keep doing so through the intersection rebuild that follows.
